This song mixes up the beats I love, the break-dancing I did back in the day, and a great story, all wrapped up into one. The band is Dirty Vegas, and the song is “Days Go By”.

… Girlfriend.

LOL! No, I’m not dreaming of a white girlfriend, but I saw Sting in concert during his Soul Cages tour and he had a black comedian come on between Concrete Blonde and himself, and that man was friggin’ hilarious (I wish I could remember his name). It was around Christmas time when the concert came to town, and the comedian starts singing the intro to White Christmas and instead of saying “Christmas” he says “Girlfriend” and the entire audience starts screaming laughing.

But that’s not what I’m here to tell you. :)

I’m here to say that for the first time in I don’t even know how many years, my area of Washington state had a real white Christmas yesterday. A surprise snowfall blanketed our little town in Christmas joy, and it helped make the day even more special. We get snow pretty much every year, but not in an abundance, and almost never on Christmas day, so it was a real treat for everyone.

I was thinking that I’ve been putting a lot of older songs up as favorites, so I thought I’d put a little twist to it today: a “newer” band playing an “older” favorite song. Here’s AFI doing a cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure (one of my favorite bands ever) at the MTV Icon: The Cure show.

Even though I’ve lived in the Seattle-area since the mid-1980’s I never heard of Nirvana until I was in Japan. I was in in the Navy, in a temporary barracks with my shipmates and one of them brought in a few new CDs for me and some other friends to listen to. One of those CDs was “Nevermind” by Nirvana. The music on that CD was so different from anything else that was on the radio at the time, and yet their music was familiar at the same time.

I remember when MTV aired Nirvana: Unplugged for the first time and I loved the whole show; jealous of the audience members who were actually in the room with them. This is one of my favorite songs from that set: “The Man Who Sold the World”.

It’s official: Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema, and MGM are now officially working together to get two movies based on the JRR Tolkien “The Hobbit” into theaters for us all to enjoy.

Book cover for JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Apparently New Line and MGM are co-financing and co-distributing while Peter and Company are pegged as Executive Producer(s). More details on The Hobbit movies at TheOneRing.net and the official Hobbit movie blog, but personally I am ecstatic that not only the movies are being made, but that PJ is attached in a very influential role. The only downside is that he’s not also directing the movies, which is unfortunate.

Sometimes I go to Post Secret and read incredible postcards that people send in about their lives, loves, fears, strengths, joys, and sorrows. Sometimes I cry when I read them; but it’s not always out of sadness.

There are more videos like the above at the Post Secret Community website.

This is a two-for-one Favorite songs post from one band: Echo and the Bunnymen.

I don’t remember where or when I first heard either of these songs, but for as long as I can remember I have always loved them both. They are classic examples of 1980’s British post-punk songs by a very influential Liverpool band. You’ll usually hear these songs on flashback or retro shows on alternative radio stations like the Resurrection Flashback Sunday on Seattle’s 107.7 The End.

“The Killing Moon”

“Lips Like Sugar”

Doing these “Favorite songs” posts (and I intend to keep doing them, BTW) have really gotten me in the mood to gather all my CD’s, MP3’s, etc. and organize all of them. I also want to see what CD’s are in need of replacing, matching covers with cases, and all that jazz. I only have about 200 CD’s to go through, but it’s much more time consuming that I had planned on. It’s also making our dining room table look like a (small) used CD store.

This isn’t even all of the CD’s!

The worst part is going to be archiving all of them so that I can put them on an MP3 player. I don’t look forward to doing that at all. sigh

Today’s favorite song is definitely one of my favorites ever! I’m talking Top 10, boys and girls.

(Page down for more details and the video for the song below)

CD cover for Enigma’s MCMXC

Every song from Enigma’s MCMXC is part of the soundtrack to my life in the early 90’s. So many of the great memories I have of that time belong to, or with, the songs on that CD; but most are not for public consumption so you aren’t going to hear about them. :)

The CD caused a lot of controversy when it was released, mostly from the mixing of sexual innuendo and religious overtones in the songs; but it also got butts on the dance floor. And while the entire CD was popular, the song that I’m talking about today is “Sadeness”, their break out hit single. It’s still a pretty sexy song and it continues to get my motor running, even today. I hope you enjoy it!
