Immortal jellyfish?!

January 27th, 2009

I, for one, welcome our new jellyfish overlords.

Apparently there’s a species of jellyfish (OK, “hydrozoan”, but jellyfish is easier for folks to understand) called “turritopsis nutricula” that, after it becomes sexually mature, is able to, for lack of a better turn of phrase, grow young again. Kind of like a squishy Fountain of Youth.

It’s called the immortal jellyfish by some, and is just another neat example of the weirdness and diversity of life on this little planet of ours.

Favorite Songs #21.

January 9th, 2009

This is one of those songs from the 80’s that makes me happy every time I hear it. I had a mix CD for many years that had this Haircut 100 song on it and I literally listened to that track on the CD until it died. I recently picked up a copy of it from iTunes and rock it on my iPod Nano. Enjoy!

Welcome to 2009!

January 1st, 2009

It was not all that of an eventful day today. The Lady of the House ended up working a mid shift today, so the schedule was thrown off a bit. Luckily I have today and tomorrow off and Number One is still on vacation until Monday, so I didn’t have to wake up early. And I didn’t. In fact we didn’t even stroll down for breakfast (brunch?) until about 10:30 at which point the boys had either waffles or Honey Nut Cherrios and I had 3 slices of combo pizza from Central Market left over from last nights festivities with Joe, Betsy, Chris, Anna, and the latter two’s little ones Ella and Miles.

I ended up reading the first 50 or so pages of Kevin Smith’s “My Boring-Ass Life” and was thoroughly digging it until I decided to go ahead and do a bit of work from home. Last week(-ish)’s snow days pushed me behind schedule a little bit, so I needed to be responsible and play catch up, which I did for a few hours.

Lunch (linner?) rolls around late, since we had a late start, and it’s bologna and cheese sammies (ick) for the boys and the rest of my Navy Bean soup from last night. Mmm… Central Market has some awesome Navy Bean soup! That and some left over baguette with a hint of butter on each slice from last night makes the meal complete.

After working and eating I got the bug to check out sales at REI with money I don’t have, so basically I was torturing myself with virtual window shopping and saving a “wish list” that may or may not get purchased. Note to REI.com developers: Devise a simple wish list system alá the Amazon.com wish list. I also was trying to figure out why my new iPod Nano only holds between a 4-8 hour charge whilst listening to music instead of the 24 hour charge I read about. Still haven’t figured that one out.

Dinner consisted of chicken legs + blue cheese dip and leftover taquitos for me, and pizza for everyone else.Thank you again, Central Market. At this point Kimberly’s home and I’m upstairs doing my business, catching up on Facebook (gossip!), and this post. You’re welcome.

And that’s how I started off my 2009.

Wassup 2008 (”Change” edition)

November 4th, 2008

I promise that this will be the only post I make this election day that is even remotely political. Unless Obama wins, and then I will do a happy dance, but you probably won’t see that. :)

And for the uninitiated, here is the original… plus the pizza guy:

Acapella Bohemian Rhapsody

October 29th, 2008

Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen is one of those song that, in my not so humble opinion, should not be imitated or duplicated because most people are going to f*ck it up. Badly. And why do such a disservice to a classic song that has even made the “Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list?

However, I was recently stumbling around on YouTube and found this acapella version and was quite impressed. Check it out:

Amy Poehler rapping for Sarah Palin on SNL

October 28th, 2008

Classic SNL Weekend Update. What, what?

I’ve got to give it to anyone who is can take a joke and roll with it like this, and while I don’t care for the McCain/Palin ticket, I definitely think that Gov. Palin did good by participating and for being able to laugh at herself like this.

Nathan Fillion, he of Firefly fame as Captain of the Serenity, in another great internet video (see Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog). It’s called (James Gunn’s) PG Porn for a reason, so don’t worry… it’s SFW.

Marauders Drum and Bugle Corps - 1988 show

September 19th, 2008

I only marched one year with the Marauders, but it was a spectacular year. It was probably the best time I had in my pre-adult life, and I’d do it again if I could. Here’s our show from that year. If you look really really close you can see me. I’m the good looking one playing Flugelhorn. :)

Favorite Songs #20.

September 7th, 2008

I can’t help it: I love 80’s pop music. What can I say? It was a very influential decade for me. And let’s face it, Rick Springfield was a typical poster boy of early 80’s stardom. Sure he’s gone on to do other things, but to me Rick will always remind me of skateboarding up and down the sidewalks of my old neighborhood.
