Sometimes I go to Post Secret and read incredible postcards that people send in about their lives, loves, fears, strengths, joys, and sorrows. Sometimes I cry when I read them; but it’s not always out of sadness.

There are more videos like the above at the Post Secret Community website.

It’s been an interesting week for me, personally. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around some recent events that have been a long time coming. I can’t really go into detail, but suffice to say that it feels good to do and say the right thing, even if it’s many years late.

There have been a few bittersweet conversations, some long over-due apologies, a little closure, and maybe, just maybe… a new beginning. I have no idea what to make of all of this yet, and even though I have been thinking about it for many years the reality of it is much more intense than I had imagined.

They say that time and tide change for no man, but every now and again the currents change just enough for you to paddle through the endlessly changing waves of life and come out into the clear, open ocean. And you’re a little better for it. Today I feel that way.

Thank you, R, for your kind words, your understanding, and much more.

This is what happens when you give me a mirror, a digital camera, and some spare time. For some reason I just love shots like these (ones with the lens over one of my eyes):

Messing around with my digital camera.

It took most of us by surprise, but it was a pleasant surprise. We ended up with close to 4″ of powdery fun for about a day before the rain came and washed it all away. And washed away a lot more, too. There was so much precipitation between the rain and the snow that some places flooded, drains were overflowing, and water had pretty much no where to go.

But while the snow was around, it sure was pretty.

Our house blanketed in the first snow of the year.

Tim, a staight-laced friend and co-worker was talking about his World of Warcraft character when asked a question about one of them. This was his response:

I only have one miner, and she hasn’t done it yet. She doesn’t have the experience.

And then much laughter ensued.

Many moons ago I was in the US Navy, a submarine-qualified Radioman aboard the USS San Francisco (SSN-711). Earlier this year that same submarine ran aground on an undersea mountain and the damage was devastating. Here are some pictures released by the Navy.

USS San Fancisco SSN-711 damage. USS San Fancisco SSN-711 damage.

I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like to be aboard on that day. CBS News has an article with more details, including an interview with the Captain and crew of the USS San Francisco.

Me: I’d like the fish strip basket.
DQ: The shrimp and chips basket?
Me: No… the fish strip basket.
DQ: OK.
Me: And a small Snickers Blizzard.
DQ: You want tartar sauce with that?
Me: *blink* I do with the fish strip basket.
DQ: Oh. Yeah… tartar for the fish, not the blizzard.
Me: Yeah. That would be gross.

Moe #1: <says_something_gross />
Me: Great. It’s a good thing I’ve got two kids, because now I’m sterile.
Moe #2: So you had a mental vasectomy?

My friend Greg and I are always talking about all aspects of development, and something that I’ve always thought is much more elegantly described in the following quote:

It is worth remembering that a new programming language is sometimes viewed as a panacea, especially by its adherents; however, there is no one language that will supplant all the others, no one tool that is unarguably the best for every possible task. There are many different problem domains in the world, and there are many possible constraints on problems within those domains.

- Hal Fulton (in “The Ruby Way”).

Now that’s what Willis was talkin’ ’bout.

Earlier today I was driving North on Highway 305 in the right hand lane when this idiot pulls up quick behind me: flashing his lights, beeping his horn, etc. At first I thought it was a friend trying to be funny, but I look back in my rear view mirror and it’s some fool waving his hands around like he wants me to get out of his way.

So what do I do? Nothing. This guy has had ample opportunity to get into the passing lane and getting around me like a normal person but instead he decides he needs to act like a fool on the road. I don’t play those games. I just kept to my normal 60MPH and went about my business.

This, of course, infuriates him for some reason (hehe). In the mean time there’s no one for about a mile in front or behind us in the passing lane and he’s getting all whipped up into a frenzy when he can easily get into the appropriate lane to pass instead of making me move. I can only imagine the tapestry of obscenities this guy was weaving.

After several minutes of revving his engine and riding the ass-end of my car and then easing off he finally gets the hint that I’m not moving and swerves past me, flipping the bird, and being an all-around asshole. I tried not to get too cranky, but I’m and Aries, and we get cranky sometimes.

And wouldn’t you know it… there is justice after all. After a few minutes I see him pulled over onto the side of the road with a state patrol vehicle behind him; lights flaring and everything.

And then I wasn’t cranky anymore.
