I only marched one year with the Marauders, but it was a spectacular year. It was probably the best time I had in my pre-adult life, and I’d do it again if I could. Here’s our show from that year. If you look really really close you can see me. I’m the good looking one playing Flugelhorn. :)

I’ve covered how much I love the song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” before, but I just saw a video of Jake Shimabukuro playing it on the ukelele and I had to share. Enjoy!

Here’s another two-for-one set of favorite songs, because damn it… I just couldn’t choose which one to show first, so I’m showing them both. No real background on why I like them… I just do.

All I can say, and those who know me really really well will understand, is the following:

A former co-worker once asked me what some of my favorite bands in high school were, and I mentioned groups like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Cure. After listing those and a few more he said something to me that was very odd: “How did you manage not killing yourself after listening to all that depressing music?”.

Well, I never really felt depressed after listening to any of the bands mentioned above. Did The Smiths or any of the others sing about less-than-joyful things? Sure, sometimes. But more often than not the lyrics and music of those songs felt bittersweet to me. And let’s face it, Depeche Mode had a period where half of the songs on a CD would be about sex, and that worked out just right for my teenage hormones.

Speaking of bittersweet, that’s exactly how I would characterize my favorite song by The Smiths, “How Soon Is Now?”.

Here’s an incredible tribute to George Harrison featuring Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Dhani Harrison, and with one of the most incendiary guitar solos I have ever seen or heard: Prince. The song is “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

This is one of my favorite rap/rock collaborations: Public Enemy and Anthrax.

If ever I were to do drunken karaoke with friends, this would be the song I’d want to do.

It’s Shatner and Ben Folds. ‘Nuff said.

There I am, watching Eric Clapton’s Crossroads 2007 on PBS, minding my own business, and then along comes John Mayer and he blows me away with this song. I’ve always liked John Mayer on the radio, but this song made me realize that I need to go out and finally pick up a CD of his. Stat. Incredible lyrics, soul-tearing guitar, and a voice that tells an entire story with every word. This is truly a new favorite song of mine.

Here’s John Mayer with his song “Gravity”:

Comedian Rob Paravonian really hates the wedding favorite “Pachelbel’s Canon in D”. Find out why:
